JMJ Farms USA is our German-American, veteran-operated family farm and home. Our farm life includes horses and ponies, dogs, chickens and other birds, a pig, and the many animals entrusted to our care.

Skálholt Icelandics

Skálholt Icelandics, operated by our son Kentigern, is the riding school and professional horse-training program located here on the farm.

The Icelandic horse is still relatively uncommon in the United States, making it especially interesting to find a place where you can meet these remarkable horses in person and learn more about the breed.

Meet the Icelandic Horse

A thousand years of history

A remarkable riding companion.

The Icelandic horse descends from horses brought to Iceland by settlers more than 1,000 years ago. Centuries of isolation preserved this distinctive breed, treasured for its strength, intelligence and friendly character.

Alongside walk, trot and canter, Icelandic horses are known for the smooth tölt, and some also perform flying pace. Whether enjoying a trail ride or developing skills in the arena, these versatile horses offer something special.

Our family’s Icelandic horse story

Our story is still in development.

From Germany to Kentucky, training hearts and horses through faith, horsemanship, and a love for God’s creation has been part of our family’s journey. Although we no longer train horses ourselves, our children now carry that tradition forward through their own businesses.

Our son Kentigern owns Skálholt Icelandics, here at JMJ Farms USA. Our daughter Maria owns Thorlak Icelandics in northern Kentucky.

We’re preparing more of our family’s story: how Icelandic horses became part of our lives, and how that passion passed to the next generation.

Our daughter Maria Hand earned her FEIF Level 1 Trainer and Riding Instructor certification in June 2024, becoming the youngest person to qualify through the USIHC Fast Track Trainers Certification.

Individual instruction for many ages, experience levels and English riding styles—from regular English riding to gaited-horse riding.

Horse & Rider Training

Young-horse training, correctional training, advancement training, and competition training for both horse and rider—including Icelandic, gaited and other English-ridden horses.

Icelandic Horsemanship

Specialized work with Icelandic horses, including correct balance, communication, soft aids and thoughtful development of the horse and rider.

Riding lessons and professional horse and rider training with Kentigern, located at JMJ Farms USA in Boston, Kentucky. Icelandic horses are a specialty; training also includes other gaited and English-ridden horses.
